The St. Johns Police Department employs one Animal Control Officer who is responsible for all animal-related complaints and issues.  The City requires tags and vaccination records for all dogs. Dogs can be licensed for $5/year or $15 for 3 years. Fines and citations can be issued for loose animals or repeated nuisance problems.

The Police Department honors requests from citizens to conduct security checks of their homes when they are on vacation. While occasional security checks cannot guarantee that the property will be safe from all vandalism or burglary, participation in this program can serve as a deterrent to criminal activity.

The Community Ride-Along Program is designed for adults and youth who wish to gain a better understanding of the role of policing. Participants may ride along on patrol with a specific officer or patrol area upon request. The safety of the participant, public and police personnel is the primary concern.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a uniformed police officer who works in conjunction with juvenile probation officers on middle school and high school campuses. The goal of the SRO is to provide enforcement and deterrence and to encourage good citizenship and leadership.

The education component provides 60 hours of classroom contact per semester and engages students in thought-provoking interpretation of the spirit and intent of the law and emphasizes the rights and purposes of the Constitution.
